North Salisbury Elementary will hold its annual Veterans Day assembly, hosted by fifth-graders, at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. Schools are a vital setting for establishing a meaningful connection between veterans and students. Through their service in uniform, veterans have invested themselves in the security, safety and well-being in our nation. NSS is honored to salute our veterans and say thank you for their service to our country. All students were encouraged to write a letter to a veteran in our community, and invite them to the program. The program will include a timeline of America’s wars, a history of the origin of Veterans Day, and recognition of all veterans in attendance. In addition, the NSS Glee Club and band will perform a selection of patriotic songs. Our Guest speaker this year is Dr. Kerry Forestal. Uncle Sam will also join NSS in this special salute to our veterans.

On Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11, parents, friends, and members of the Northwestern Elementary School community are invited to join the school for a special 10 a.m. program honoring all men and women who have helped keep the United States safe and free for more than 240 years.

A special invitation goes out to all parents and community members to attend this program.  Reservations are not required, but please come a bit early as the program will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, recognizing and celebrating the official ending of World War One at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In 1954 the U.S. Congress amended the law to designate Armistice Day as a national Veterans Day holiday. Since that time the United States military has been called upon to defend freedom in many conflicts around the world and to defend Americans even here at home.

Northwestern Elementary School is proud to be the host for a special recognition and program of thanks to all U.S. Veterans, but especially to those local “hometown heroes.” The keynote speaker will be one of Mardela’s own – U.S.M.C. Staff Sgt. Matt Conner (Northwestern 1998, MHS class of 2004), now serving with the Marines at Fort Beaufort/Parris Island in South Carolina.

A concert, presented by the Northwestern Student Choir under the direction of Mr. Mark Evans, will include special music from those wartime years when the United States experienced the challenges of defending our freedoms and blessings. Local veterans from several past wars will be present and will be honored as well. Also, a number of public officials and dignitaries will be on hand to lend their support. Westside Historical Society and Adkins Historical & Museum will also join in the program to introduce an ongoing project to honor all local veterans.

The Wicomico High School JROTC will participate in the 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 Veterans Day ceremony outside the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. This ceremony is organized by the Wicomico County War Memorial Committee and is open to everyone in the community. The ceremony will include patriotic music, prayer and remembrance to honor all veterans. Veterans Day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military, in wartime or peacetime.

At James M. Bennett High, the Student Government Association has encouraged all students and staff to wear red, white and blue on Veterans Day in honor of those who have served. The school will be spotlighting and honoring each of the five branches of the U.S. Armed Services during the morning announcements.
