OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST

Description: The purpose of the contest is to give young people an opportunity to develop their own views around a central idea.  Students submit a written essay on a designated theme.

Eligibility Requirements:  Students in grades 9-12

VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS (VFW):  Patriots Pen Essay Competition

Description: Students prepare and submit a written essay on a required theme. The essay competition gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy.

Eligibility Requirements:  Students in grades 6, 7, 8 at participating schools invited by local VFW

Important Dates:  Applications are due around November 1

ELSIE W. JACKSON OLD HOME PRIZE

Description: The purpose of this essay contest is to preserve unrecorded or little known facts and legends connected with the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  In addition to preserving information, the award is intended to arouse in students an increased awareness of and interest in the rich cultural heritage of this area.

Eligibility Requirements: Students in Grade 12

Important Dates:  Applications are due April 15.


Awards:  A wining senior from each school receives a cash award.

Description:
Every Friday in The Daily Times and on Delmarvanow.com, the voices, opinions and suggestions of high school and university students in Wicomico County are published.  We want to help you share your suggestions, concerns, or opinions with our entire readership. 

Criteria:  Read below for publication requirements.

 Text Box: Write your opinion, in roughly 450-600 words, describing your concern, your endorsement or your suggestions about our community (or all three, as applicable).

Text Box: Use facts to build your case or argument in favor of or against whatever your topic may be, and sign it with a tagline using this format and your information: Jane Doe is a junior at Whatever High School in Hometown.

 Text Box: Take a photo to illustrate your idea or topic (no Google images or other borrowed images please) or have a friend create something digitally or in a more traditional artistic medium (drawing, painting?). Include a credit line with your friend or photographer’s name, grade and school, and for photos especially, a short caption.

 Text Box: You are also invited to submit a video clip of 1-2 minutes that is shot by yourself and/or a friend (again, please include credit information for anyone who helps you with this) to accompany your written opinion, to appear with the online version.
