Rising Juniors at James M. Bennett High, Parkside High, Wicomico High Can Sign Up for GEAR UP Summer Camps

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is partnering with Salisbury University and Towson University to offer a series of College & Career Prep camps for GEAR UP students this summer.

GEAR UP students are rising 11th graders at James M. Bennett, Parkside and Wicomico high schools. Anyone interested in attending a GEAR UP Summer Camp should pre-register as soon as possible. Space is limited and camps will fill up quickly.

Note: A $25 one–time participation fee is required. Students can then sign up for any camp(s) listed below. Contact Jackie Leggett to register, 410-677-5994 or jleggett@wcboe.org.

 

July 9-13 from 8am-3pm; Stay Overnight July 11-12

GEAR UP Camp Enchant

Salisbury University

Student will work with Salisbury University professors to participate in inquiry and problem-based learning experiences that are creative, hands-on, relevant to real-life problems and solutions. Camp Enchant will help GEAR UP students achieve College and Career Readiness Standards in Mathematics and ELA, as well as engage them in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning experiences. Students will also experience campus life by staying two nights in the college dorms. Students will be supervised for all day and evening activities.

GEAR UP College Advantage Camp

Towson University

GULA Ambassadors will continue leadership training which began three years ago. This program allows participants to focus on leadership skills, developing character, & team-building skills, while also addressing challenges of attaining a college degree. Students will walk away with completed scholarship applications, a strategy for finding the right “fit” for college, and the foundations for a personal essay. Students will stay on the campus of Towson University. Transportation to the university and supervision for day and evening activities will be provided.

 

July 30-Aug 2 from 8am-2pm

SAT Prep Camp

James M. Bennett High

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is taken in school by all Wicomico County 11th graders. This workshop curriculum teaches math, grammar and vocabulary building skills, which will help prepare students for the SAT.  This is an opportunity for GEAR UP students to gain an advantage in test preparation. Students who attend at least 3 of 4 sessions will have the option to take the August 25th SAT free of charge.

 

August 6-9 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Topics include what to expect during your junior year of high school, how to prepare for college admissions, how to choose the right college, and how to pay for college.
